After Team USA coaches reviewed footage from last hockey season, Palaian 鈥 who had 14 assists and six goals her freshman year 鈥 made the roster, which included 23 American Collegiate Hockey Association Women's Division I players representing 11 different states. Palaian says UM-Dearborn Women鈥檚 Ice Hockey Coach Carrie Sirola contacted her over the summer and said she wanted to nominate Palaian to play on the national team 鈥 less than a month later, they learned Palaian made the team.
鈥淭eam USA Coach Lindsay Ellis called and said they鈥檇 love to have me on the team,鈥 Palaian says. 鈥淚 immediately wanted to say yes, but needed to check with my parents first. My parents were just as excited as I was. My family went to Italy to watch me play 鈥 including my grandmas, who never did a trip like that before. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I was able to share with my family.鈥
That鈥檚 important to Palaian 鈥 who鈥檚 played on travel hockey leagues and school teams 鈥 because of the support that her family has given to her hockey career. Palaian says her family helped get her to the world stage by driving to practices, purchasing equipment, cheering for her at games, playing hockey together and more. 鈥淓ven when I was little, I鈥檇 go with my dad to a league on Saturday mornings where he鈥檇 play with friends. We鈥檇 be there at 6 a.m. They let me play too. My dad and older brother played hockey and I wanted to be like them,鈥 she says.
Palaian did a little sightseeing in Italy and says the food was outstanding, but the bulk of her time was spent on the ice with practices, scrimmages and games. She met new friends 鈥 even some from UM-Dearborn鈥檚 rival teams. 鈥淭here were girls from Adrian College on Team USA 鈥 we are definitely rivals on the ice, but it鈥檚 cool to get to know people beyond that,鈥 she says. 鈥淲e played recently and were friendly, but went back to being aggressive as soon as we stepped on the ice.鈥
Palaian says playing for Team USA was a great hockey experience 鈥 and it鈥檚 one of many more to come while she wears No. 55. The UM-Dearborn Women鈥檚 Ice Hockey Team heads into the Central Collegiate Women鈥檚 Hockey Association Playoffs on Thursday. .
鈥淚 love playing for UM-Dearborn. I love my team. They are my family here and we don鈥檛 stop working. We support each other and know that we only get breaks when we sleep 鈥 we鈥檙e OK with that,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 know that we鈥檒l win some and lose some, but what matters is what you learn, what you give and what you take from it. Hockey, and this team, has given me so much and I鈥檓 going to continue to give it my all too.鈥
